Getting up-close & Personal

With Fleshbot Best New Star, DEREK KAGE

Vessel: All right, Derek, welcome to the Vessel session.
So I want to start off - my name is Brady. This is Derek. Would you like to give us a little introduction?

D: I was born and raised in Huntsville, Alabama. Kind of a “hillbilly vibe” from the outskirts of town. I grew up pretty poor, bullied, and all of that nonsense… had kind of a crazy family. That just really wasn't my idea of the best way to grow up. We'll just say that. And yeah, I definitely was not an Alabama person. I mean, there were a couple of things I like: for example, I love good food. But, overall, Alabama just wasn't for me. So, I got my undergraduate degree; then I got my graduate degree. And then once I finished that, I left for DC. I lived in DC for about a decade. And let's just say I made my way through.

Vessel: I really want to get into this next question. How did you get into the (adult) film industry? I'm very intrigued by how you were able to navigate your way into this world.

D: So actually that was a great segue, because DC was kind of my introduction to my first porn stars, like first time meeting them. And also, I got a lot of my sexual awareness and prowess, I guess you could say, kind of from Alabama. You couldn't really do a whole lot in Alabama. I mean, everything was definitely hush hush underground. You know, my first hookup was from an AOL chat room, if that gives you an idea of how far we are going back. And so yeah, I was always very sexual. I was always very open-minded about it. I was always very curious. And from there, I experimented, I did everything that I could think of. And I never had a problem being in front of a camera. Even doing that it was just kind of like “Ooh, you know, grab a phone. Let’s see what happens. Let's see what we can capture” and then so it all just kind of came naturally. And the experiences I had in life, led me to one day meeting one of my friends, Grant Ducati, and he was like, “Hey, do you want to film? Do you want to do a studio scene?” I thought, let's just give it a shot. Let's see what happens. And soon as I got on set, I was like, this is where I need to be. This is exactly what I should have been doing my entire life. And everything was great. The people I worked with were wonderful. The way everybody just is on set was exactly that. It was my place.

Vessel: What would you like to do when you retire from filming? Would you like to become a director or have your own studio? Do you see yourself continuing the pursuit of this career?

D: I don't particularly have the interest of directing or casting … nothing like that. I see that side and I see what they go through. The talent and the vision that they have … and I just don't have that. I'm more of “tell me what to do and I will put on the best performance possible”. That's me. So in the future, for sure advocacy for sex work is in my repertoire, working for the Free Speech Coalition, which they're the only reason we're able to do what we do. I donate to them and I could see myself working for them and working for sex-worker advocacy. But after this, I actually plan on being a voice actor. I'm taking courses professionally to learn voice acting like animation, audiobooks, all of that to use my voice because everywhere I go, anybody I talked to, they're like “your voice”.

Vessel: That Southern charm! I am requesting a lullaby right now, sing me to sleep.

D: Hahaha… Yeah, so voice acting is probably my next avenue when I'm finished in the film industry. I love that but I don't think that's gonna be anytime soon.

Vessel: How did Derek Kage come to be? How did you choose your industry name?

D: I apologize immediately to anyone named Derek. So I'll start with Derek, how I got that name. I actually searched the “douchiest names for a man”. The first one was Chad. Second one was Derrick. Third one was Kyle. And I'd already had the Kage last name. So I was like “I don't want to do Kyle Kage because that'll be alliteration just didn't work for me. And then Chad Kage, it doesn't sound like a douche bag. And then Derek Kage was that flows has a good kind of oomph to it. And so yeah, that's how I got there.

The Kage portion of my name came about… hope you're ready for this. We were getting ready when I first started working… mostly with fan sites. I've been doing fan content like Onlyfans and Just For Fans for a little more than three years, at the time. I started off my persona, I had a brand it wasn't Derek Kage yet, but it was me wearing chastity like a chastity cage. It's like I said, I explore everything if my mind or my eyes catch something. I want to experience that, I want to try that. So I experimented with all forms of chastity and I still to this day, I love it. I absolutely love the dominant submissive, the power exchange. That's my bread and butter. I know you're like, “Oh god. That's my bread and butter.” When I started getting into studio porn, they were like, “That's not for everybody. It's not something you can sell.” I talked to Chi Chi LaRue, if you're familiar with her… she's been around for decades. She's like one of the iconic gay porn directors in history. And she was talking to me about it. She was like, “Well, your last name could be cage”. And I'm like, let's do that. But with a “K” to give it a little flair. Yeah. So that's how Kage came about is an homage to chastity.
