Interview with Photographer, Harrison Woodard

Could you please provide a brief introduction of yourself?

My name is Harrison Woodard. I'm a fashion/editorial photographer originally from Utah, but raised in St. Louis, Missouri. Currently, I am a co-owner of "DORSIA," a photography/tattoo studio located in Salt Lake City.

Can you recall when you acquired your first camera?

I got my first camera back in high school! It was a Canon Rebel T5, if I remember correctly. At that time, I was employed at a local photo studio called FOTOFLY, where my role involved running used SD cards to the editors.

At what point did you make the decision to pursue photography professionally?

I can't pinpoint an exact moment when I knew I was fully committed, but gradually, I began collaborating with brands like Socially Drained, Juah Apparel, and various other creative merchandise companies.

What led you to select "photography" as the medium for expressing your vision?

I have a deep appreciation for all forms of art. While I didn't possess a natural talent for painting or sculpting, I found myself drawn to photography. During my time at FOTOFLY, I discovered that I had a unique perspective. Photographs have an enduring quality, and I aspire to leave behind a visual legacy showcasing the beauty I encounter in my daily life.

How would you characterize your photographic style?

I'm passionate about infusing my work with a dark and dramatic aesthetic. It adds a sense of authenticity to the shadows within us all.

Can you recall a particular project that has had the most significant impact on your career?

I'd say my immersion into the tattoo community played a significant role. Working closely with individuals like my business partner and co-owner of our studio "Dorsia," Collier, whose distinct and stunning work compelled us to collaborate. Additionally, my talented partner Luna, with her multifaceted skills, consistently brings fresh perspectives to our projects. This immersion has connected me with numerous creators and artists, inspiring me to explore new and diverse visual styles.

What are some of the challenges you encounter as a photographer?

One of the greatest hurdles I've faced as a photographer is getting my art out into the world and reaching a wider audience. I firmly believe that having several publications will amplify both my work and my audience on a larger scale.

Which photographers do you hold in high esteem?

I admire numerous photographers, but my top three favorites are YZA Voku (@yzavoku), IAN HIPPOLYTE (@ianhippo), and SUD (@shotbysud).
YZA Voku's work captivates me with its simplicity and gritty allure. Ian's photography has inspired me to refine my angles, particularly in the realm of fashion. SUD's portfolio holds special significance for me because they beautifully capture individuals heavily adorned with tattoos, offering representation in an industry where it can be challenging for such individuals to find visibility.

What steps do you take to ensure a successful photo shoot?

I follow standard procedures before each shoot, ensuring that my batteries are charged, my memory cards are ready, and I've done light checks. Since each client brings a unique approach, I adapt accordingly. By ensuring I'm well-prepared and my equipment is in tune, I'm able to embrace the spontaneity of each shoot.

Are there any indispensable tools or equipment you bring to every session?

Without a doubt, my must-have lens is the Canon 85mm. It's my go-to choice for capturing stunning shots.

Where do you draw inspiration for your creative endeavors?

Creativity constantly surrounds me, which means that even when I have unconventional ideas, there are other creatives available to offer their unique perspectives. My business partner encourages me to delve into the darker aspects of my imagery, adding depth to my work. Additionally, my partner is invaluable during shoots, providing advice and innovative ideas, whether it's guiding models through poses or suggesting creative angles for the shots. Together, we elevate each other's work.

What advice would you offer to aspiring photographers?

I believe in continuous growth and relentless pursuit. It's been a journey to reach where I am today, and I'm constantly evolving with every step forward.
