Interview with Country Singer

Whitney Lusk

Vessel: Could you provide us with a brief introduction? Let's get to know you a little bit.

Whitney: Okay. Well, my name is Whitney Lusk. I was born and raised in Spanish Fork, Utah, and I've lived here my whole life. I'm a country singer-songwriter, and I've been singing for as long as I can remember.

Vessel: When did you start singing?

W: Like the most cliché answer I'm sure every singer gives, I've been singing ever since I could talk. My mom has videos of me at the cabin when I was two years old singing Little Mermaid. But I've been singing and taking voice lessons professionally since I was eight.

Vessel: Can you recall your first experience performing in front of an audience? I'm curious to know how you felt and what it was like for you.

W: Yes, I was thinking about this the other day, actually. I was in first grade, so I was probably six or seven years old. My elementary school had its version of American Idol, but it was called Kenyan Idol. I want to say I chose the best song ever – “God Bless the USA” by Lee Greenwood. I wore this cute little dress covered with stripes and stars. My best friend at the time danced in circles behind me. I got up there and sang to the track. It wasn't even like a karaoke track; I sang with the lead, the regular singer. I was terrified. I told him, “I don't want to do it. I changed my mind.” Then I got up there, and I remember people were clapping. And I thought, “This is amazing. I like this feeling, that people enjoy hearing me sing.” From then on, that's what I wanted to do. I wanted to be a singer.
