Interview with Mathieu Quinlan

Fashion Designer

Could you please briefly introduce yourself?

Sure, I'm Mathieu Quinlan, an emerging designer based in Utah. Originally from Wisconsin, I now reside in Salt Lake City where I'm studying fashion design and technical apparel at Salt Lake Community College. I'm set to complete both degrees this spring.

When did your passion for art first emerge?

I've always been drawn to art, but it really took hold in high school. Exploring my identity and finding solace through art during those years played a significant role in shaping my passion.

Can you tell us about your journey into fashion design?

My interest in fashion started in high school when my friends and I began to express ourselves through our clothing. Before that, I didn't pay much attention to style. As I was about to graduate, I stumbled upon the fashion design program at SLCC. Intrigued by the idea of creating my own designs, I decided to give it a try. It was a decision I haven't regretted, as I've only grown more passionate about design since then.

What aspects of fashion design do you find most captivating?

I love the freedom it offers. The only real constraint in fashion design is the ability to bring a garment to life once it's designed. There's something incredibly satisfying about taking a wild idea, putting it on paper, and seeing it through the entire process until it's worn. That feeling of accomplishment is what keeps me hooked.

How do you continually refine your design concepts and sewing skills?

Being part of the fashion institute at SLCC has been pivotal for me in consistently improving my skills and learning new ones. Through a variety of classes, I've had the chance to experiment with draping, drafting, CAD programs, and sewing techniques on various fabrics, including recent ventures into shoe making. To refine my design concepts, I actively seek out diverse experiences and sensations that ignite fresh ideas and perspectives, which then translate into innovative designs.

Can you describe your unique design styles and elements?

Lately, I've been fascinated by blending disparate subcultures into a single style. For example, in my recent collection, I've explored the fusion of high-class elegance with gritty streetwear, striving to create a cohesive yet distinct aesthetic. This seamless integration of styles is a hallmark of my designs.

Where do you typically draw inspiration for your designs?

My inspiration often springs from architecture, drawing from the striking silhouettes of buildings. I also find inspiration in nature, particularly in natural rock formations, as well as in the vibrant culture of skateboarding. My personal style also heavily influences what I enjoy designing.

Who are some of the designers who have influenced you?

Lately, I've been inspired by the work of the Gvasalia brothers, Peter Do, Rick Owens, and Richard Stark.

What are your aspirations for the future?

My immediate goal is to gain experience working with established brands before eventually launching my own label and creating my own designs. I also hope to see my designs worn by celebrities and public figures in the coming years; I believe it's a significant form of recognition.

Do you plan on relocating for career advancement?

While I do see myself relocating for career growth eventually, I plan to stay in Salt Lake City for at least a few more years. I've grown to love the city and the community here.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?

I want to express my gratitude to Francis for this opportunity and to everyone who has supported me in my fashion journey so far. Keep an eye out for exciting developments to come!
